For $7.99 a month, subscribers get an ad-free experience on most videos, excluding music content.
YouTube has been trialing Premium Lite in select markets since 2021, and is planning an expanded global rollout this.
YouTube has expanded its subscription offerings in the U.S. with the introduction of 'Premium Lite' – a $7.99 per month plan targeting users seeking an ad-free experience across most videos, excluding music content.
Ad-haters rejoice: As of now, YouTube's combined Music and Premium services have amassed over 125 million subscribers globally, including trial users. The Alphabet-owned company is hoping Premium Lite will further boost these numbers by appealing to a broader audience seeking an affordable ad-free viewing option.
Not you, music fans: Considerably cheaper than YouTube's standard $13.99 Premium subscription, the Premium Lite plan does not offer ad-free music streaming, offline downloads, and background playback. Its U.S. launch follows earlier tests of 'Premium Lite' in select European markets starting in 2021.
Lite is going global: In the coming weeks, YouTube plans to make Premium Lite available to users in its current pilot countries: Thailand, Germany, and Australia. "We'll continue to expand our Premium Lite pilots to additional countries this year and introduce more ways for our users to get the most from their subscriptions," YouTube Premium's Director of Product Management, Jack Greenberg, said in a post.
